Our Link Parish: St Mark's, Kibi
Kibi or Kyebi is a town in southeastern Ghana on the eastern slopes of the Atewa Range, and is the capital of the East Akim Municipal District. It lies at an altitude of 318 m, and has a population of about 23,000. It is served at a short distance by a station on the Ghanaian Railway network.. Kibi is quite a poor area even by Ghanaian standards with a lot of unemployment. The main industry in mining, mainly gold and minerals.
S. Mark’s, our link parish, serves the whole town. The parish is in the Diocese of Koforidua, Ghana and is part of the Church of the Province of West Africa. The Anglican’s of Kibi worship in an impressive new church consecrated in 2009 by Bishop Francis Quashie. The parish is a major provider of education and runs a large nursery school, primary and small secondary schools. The secondary and primary schools are desperately in need of improvement. Kibi has a school for the deaf, founded in 1975, which by 2008 had 213 students.
S. Helen’s have raised five thousand pounds to provide the roof for the new church and raised three thousand pounds for major development work to the primary school in 2012. It is hoped that we can raise funds in the future to help build a new secondary school.
Priest and parishioners from S. Helen’s have visited Kibi and are always impressed by the welcome and the vitality of the church in Ghana.
